CHATHAM-KENT, ONTARIO, RURAL COMMUNITY WITH URBAN APPEAL
Chatham is a small town setting with big city thinking. Sitting in the heart of the County of Kent, the municipality now named Chatham-Kent encompasses all of the small towns, villages and rural areas as far west as Tilbury and as far east as the edge of West Lorne. It offers many things to many people. With its rural communities, the farms and the villages it allows for city people to taste the tranquillity and sereness of living in a small community. It is rich in farm soil allowing farmers to grow a variety of produce. The River Thames flows through the city and winds its way through the county. Sitting along Lake Erie some of the most southern communities are a draw to boaters, cottagers and recreationers, many of whom have now made permanent homes along the shores of Lake Erie,Lake St. Clair and the Thames River. We are neighbours with Michigan especially across the St. Clair Lake. Fishing is another passtime bringing tourists from all over. Each community has their own summer events and activities to suit one and all. Because of the agricultural influence there are many fairs and exhibitions and festivals throughout the Chatham-Kent municipality. To me, coming from big cities, Chatham is a bonus for travel time. The usual time to get from one end of the city to the other is a maximum of ten minutes. The hold up would be caused by an accident or getting stopped at the railway crossing.
